The term ‘gym penis’ has been making waves online, as people discuss their experiences of noticing a perceived shrinkage of their penis and/or testicles during workouts.
So, what does this really mean?
It turns out many individuals find that their penis can appear significantly smaller post-exercise. Fortunately, this isn’t a cause for concern; experts say it’s a normal physiological response.
Dr. Raevti Bole, a urologist from Cleveland Clinic, explains that working out activates the sympathetic nervous system, leading to muscle contractions around the scrotum, which pulls the testicles closer to the body.
According to aesthetic nurse practitioner Chris Nustamante, “Many men experience some degree of temporary retraction while working out, but the amount can vary widely. Some might hardly notice it, while others feel as if they are turtling, where the penis contracts nearer to the body.”
If you’ve experienced a similar sensation after jumping into a cold swimming pool, there’s a scientific basis for it. Cold temperatures can produce this effect as well, which might explain why ‘gym penis’ is more noticeable in locker rooms and shower areas.
Nustamante reassures us that once the body cools down and blood flow normalizes, the penis usually returns to its regular flaccid state, typically within minutes to an hour after exercising.
When to Consult a Professional
However, if you notice any persistent changes to your penis or testicles, it’s wise to consult a healthcare professional. The NHS advises contacting a GP if you observe a new lump, swelling, altered appearance, or ongoing pain. You should also seek help if you experience consistent issues with getting or maintaining an erection.
But if, after a workout, you glance down and realize you’ve possibly lost a centimeter or two, don’t stress; it’s generally just your body responding to the physical activity.
