Tragic Incident in Illinois Involving Illegal Immigrant
In Illinois, a state known for its sanctuary policies, an illegal immigrant is accused of causing the deaths of a Republican official and his wife in Coles County. The incident involves 34-year-old Edwin Pacheco Meza, originally from Honduras, who was reportedly driving a van on October 24 when he veered into the center lane, colliding with Michael Clayton, 71, and his wife, Gail Clayton, 66. The couple died instantly.
Michael Clayton, a member of the Coles County Commission, was remembered in their obituary as a dedicated community member alongside his wife. “Mike and Gail were a team in every sense of the word,” it stated, highlighting their strong values, love for family, and commitment to local businesses. They were regulars at the Charleston Farmers Market and actively supported small businesses in their hometown.
Pacheco-Meza entered the U.S. as an unidentified fugitive. He was with Juan Morales-Martinez, an 18-year-old illegal immigrant from Guatemala who was released into the U.S. following a crossing in December 2023. Police discovered that the two had illegal firearms, ammunition, and open containers of drugs and alcohol in their vehicle.
Police charged Pacheco-Meza with reckless homicide and driving under the influence, while Morales-Martinez faced charges for drug possession and weapons violations. Following their arrest, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) issued detainers for the illegal immigrants. However, due to the state’s sanctuary policies, the local jail disregarded these requests. ICE later managed to arrest Morales-Martinez as he was released from prison, whereas Pacheco-Meza remains in custody.
“Two innocent people were killed because this criminal illegal alien chose to drive drunk,” stated Tricia McLaughlin from the Department of Homeland Security. The situation has sparked reactions from various officials, with a statement mentioning past efforts to restore law and order by activating federal agencies to address criminal behavior among illegal immigrants.
