Tragic Accident Involves Illegal Alien with Previous DUI Charges
An undocumented immigrant, with a background of drunk driving offenses, has been implicated in a tragic car accident that claimed the lives of a woman and her 11-year-old daughter in Lakewood Township, New Jersey.
Raul Luna Perez, 43, originally from Mexico, was arrested at the Lakewood Township Police Station and faces serious charges, including two counts of vehicular homicide and assault.
On July 26, law enforcement responded to a deadly crash supposedly caused by Luna Perez. Reports indicate he crossed into oncoming traffic, colliding with another vehicle carrying two young girls.
The mother was pronounced dead at the scene, and although her daughter was taken to a local hospital, she unfortunately succumbed to her injuries later. The second 11-year-old girl in the car is in serious but stable condition at a hospital in New Jersey.
Luna-Perez had two passengers in his vehicle as well, both of whom sustained minor injuries.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has initiated a detainer against Luna-Perez, signaling their intention to take custody if he is released from local authorities. According to ICE officials, while he has several legal infractions, New Jersey’s sanctuary laws hindered his transfer to their custody.
Prior to this incident, Luna-Perez was arrested on June 25, 2023, for simple domestic violence. Earlier in the year, on March 20 and again on April 17, he faced charges for driving under the influence.
Tricia McLaughlin from the Department of Homeland Security criticized Governor Murphy’s sanctuary policies, suggesting they failed to protect the community and contributed to the tragedy that has affected this innocent family.
McLaughlin expressed, “President Trump and Secretary Noem will continue to work towards removing these criminal undocumented immigrants to prevent further harm.”
According to statements from Governor Murphy’s office, he does not endorse the sanctuary approach. A spokesperson mentioned that Luna-Perez, despite his multiple arrests for serious offenses, should not have been behind the wheel and should have already faced deportation due to his prior criminal history.
Luna-Perez is currently being held at the Ocean County Jail.
