Charges Filed Against Undocumented Immigrant in Fatal Crash
A 19-year-old undocumented immigrant has been charged with causing the death of a 27-year-old Colorado woman in a high-speed crash reportedly triggered by a drunk driver. This incident has sparked significant outrage regarding the state’s sanctuary policies and has led to strong criticism from various officials and legal representatives.
Eduardo Parra Corral was allegedly driving over 100 mph early on November 9 when he disregarded a red light and collided with a vehicle belonging to a woman from Greeley. She succumbed to her injuries five days after the accident.
Initially, Parra Corral faced charges for driving without a valid license, possession of alcohol as a minor, and vehicular assault. However, the situation escalated to vehicular homicide following the victim’s death.
The Department of Homeland Security confirmed that Parra Corral is in the United States illegally and has previously been deported.
DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin labeled Parra Corral a “criminal illegal alien from Mexico,” outlining the timeline of events. In a statement, she noted that he was arrested for speeding and driving under the influence. After killing the young woman, he was taken into custody by Immigration and Customs Enforcement on November 10 and deported by November 25.
McLaughlin emphasized the stance of the previous administration, stating that if someone enters the country and breaks the law, they would be apprehended and removed.
A passenger in Parra Corral’s vehicle, 20-year-old Omar Perea Burciaga, was also detained for allegedly presenting false identification and having a prior warrant for a hit-and-run.
The victim has been identified as Jasmine Faith Carpio of Windsor, and her obituary reflects her as a kind and devoted person who was cherished by her friends and family. According to her mother, Carpio worked at the hospital where she ultimately passed away, had recently achieved financial stability, and was looking forward to starting a family next year.
A spokesperson for Greeley Police commented on the tragic impact of the accident, expressing commitment to a thorough and impartial investigation, without disclosing details about Parra-Corral’s immigration status.
Douglas County District Attorney George Brauchler pointed out the public safety implications of Colorado’s immigration enforcement policies. He articulated that such incidents raise pressing questions about when individuals enter the country and whether previous contacts with law enforcement were overlooked.
He criticized Colorado’s sanctuary laws, asserting that they contribute to a perception of the state as being more welcoming to those in the country illegally. This incident, Brauchler argued, exemplifies the potential dangers arising from such policies.
The state’s Republican Party has weighed in as well, with Rep. Lauren Boebert blaming the incident on the Democratic policies that facilitate the presence of harmful individuals in Colorado. The Colorado Republican Party echoed her concerns, raising alarm over future implications for public safety.
Investigations are ongoing, and authorities maintain that all suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
