Undocumented immigrant facing increased charges in Florida for alcohol-related hit-and-run

Drunk Driving Incident in Florida Leads to Enhanced Charges

A 34-year-old man, Roberto Sandoval Lopez, has been arrested in Polk County, Florida, following a drunk driving incident that resulted in a hit-and-run. His immigrant status has led to “enhanced” charges against him, according to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities reported that he crashed a white Honda into a fence in Winter Haven around 7 p.m. on a Saturday. A witness alerted the sheriff’s office about the crash.

After the incident, deputies found Sandoval Lopez walking nearby. They noticed signs of intoxication—his eyes were described as “watery” and “bloody,” and there was a distinct smell of alcohol. When questioned, he reportedly admitted to drinking six bottles of beer a couple of hours before the accident.

Follow-up sobriety tests indicated several signs of impairment, which raised further concerns.

Once in custody, Sandoval Lopez was booked into Polk County Jail. Besides the drunk driving charge, he faced additional charges linked to the property damage caused by the crash, and notably, he lacked a valid driver’s license.

Due to his undocumented status, the charges against him were upgraded, categorizing his actions as felony offenses related to drunk driving with property damage. The remaining charges are considered first-degree misdemeanors.

Sheriff Grady Judd stated in a Facebook post that Sandoval Lopez will be held until authorities from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrive. Judd noted the fortunate aspect of the incident was that only the fence was damaged and criticized Sandoval Lopez for fleeing the scene, labeling him as a coward.

Judd emphasized that illegal immigration is a crime in the U.S. and under Florida law, such a status can intensify other criminal charges. He explained that anyone in the state illegally, like Sandoval Lopez, faces significantly escalated consequences for their actions.
