ICE Files Arrest Detainer for Illegal Immigrant Accused of Assaulting Passenger

On Friday, Immigration Customs Enforcement (ICE) announced that they have filed an arrest detainer for Samehamad Chami, a 49-year-old illegal immigrant from Lebanon. Chami was accused of luring Uber passengers in Texas.

Chami was taken into custody by police in Friendswood on August 6 after he allegedly sexually assaulted a young woman while he was driving for Uber. The victim, 21, had fallen asleep in the backseat after a night out, and, according to reports, Chami behaved inappropriately while parked near a school.

Reports indicate that the victim’s family tracked her location and found her in an empty parking lot around 3 a.m. The woman recalled Chami’s hands on her pants, indicating a troubling situation.

The Friendswood police department noted that Chami had intentionally ended the ride before dropping the woman off at her home.

DHS Shares Details about Chami’s Immigration Status

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) released a statement stating that Chami entered the U.S. on December 2, 2021, during the Biden administration. He had initially applied for an extension by December 1, 2022, but failed to leave the country when required, thus remaining in the U.S. for over three years, according to the DHS.

A representative from DHS emphasized Chami’s situation, saying that they are committed to preventing the release of individuals like him back into the community, especially considering the nature of his alleged crime.

DHS Comments on Immigration Policies

DHS Deputy Chief Tricia McLaughlin stated, “ICE has filed an arrest detainer for Samehamad Chami, who committed crimes after entering the country. The accused has been charged with sexually assaulting a 21-year-old passenger.” In her remarks, she referenced the importance of protecting women and holding offenders accountable.

Chami’s detainment coincided with earlier reports of concerns regarding illegal immigration and the safety of residents in U.S. communities. According to the DHS, measures have been put in place to ensure that similar situations are managed properly.
