A woman named Latosha Ann Cooper, 45, was shot multiple times in a Walmart parking lot in Pennsylvania last Wednesday, by a man who approached her.
The Cheltenham Township Police arrived around 11:30 p.m., only to find Cooper with gunshot wounds; she was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to friends and co-workers, it seems Cooper’s marriage to the suspect, Destino Jean Louis, was primarily a means for him to gain legal status.
Surveillance footage showed a man lurking by the store’s entrance just prior to the shooting.
Cooper, who worked at Walmart, had been speaking with a co-worker after their shift when the masked shooter attacked her and escaped.
Following their investigation, the police arrested Destino Jean Louis, 23, Cooper’s ex-boyfriend, who is reportedly an undocumented immigrant from Haiti. They had a brief romantic relationship, having acquired a marriage license in March 2025, but it seems Cooper’s intentions differed from what Jean Louis expected.
After some time, she distanced herself from Jean Louis, which allegedly infuriated him. Official records show she withdrew her application to allow him to remain in the U.S. under her sponsorship in July 2026.
Cell phone records placed Jean Louis near Walmart at the time of the shooting, and he had been there several times in the preceding weeks.
He was apprehended for immigration violations at a family member’s home in Philadelphia the following Friday, where authorities also discovered a bag containing .22 caliber ammunition.
Jean Louis is facing charges including first-degree murder and illegal possession of a firearm, and he currently remains in custody without bail at the Montgomery County Correctional Facility.
The U.S. Marshals Service reported that Jean Louis had overstayed his visa.
Sources from Homeland Security stated that he had entered the U.S. through a humanitarian program initiated by the Biden administration in November 2023, but his status was revoked in June 2025.
In a statement to the police, Jean Louis claimed he was at a family residence during the shooting and asserted he never possessed a firearm.
The investigation continues.
