Illegal Immigrant Arrested After Drunken Hit-and-Run in Florida
A 24-year-old illegal immigrant is in custody following a hit-and-run incident in Florida that injured a motorcyclist.
Authorities report that Gudiel Miguel Vasquez was driving a black Scion sedan in Polk County on Sunday night when he veered into a Walmart parking lot and disregarded a stop sign. He allegedly collided with the motorcycle shortly afterwards, police indicated.
Witnesses stated that Vasquez did not stop to assist the victim, continuing to drive despite significant front-end damage to his vehicle.
The motorcyclist suffered a broken arm and a concussion and was taken to a local hospital for treatment.
Authorities were alerted to the incident shortly after it occurred. An officer noticed a suspicious vehicle at an intersection nearby, which was missing its front bumper and emitting smoke from the engine. Upon approaching, Vasquez reportedly admitted he didn’t have a driver’s license.
Additionally, police found two more passengers in Vasquez’s vehicle along with open cans of Modelo beer. It is believed that all three men were intoxicated and had entered the country illegally.
Vasquez faces several charges including leaving the scene of an accident with injury, driving under the influence, driving under the influence with property damage, and lacking a valid driver’s license. He is currently held in Polk County Jail, with an ICE detainer lodged against him by the Department of Homeland Security.
Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd spoke on the matter, emphasizing the seriousness of the situation: “This is another example of someone who is here illegally and disregarding our laws: driving without a license, driving while impaired, hitting someone and fleeing.” He further expressed hope for Vasquez’s deportation back to Guatemala, aiming to prevent him from causing further harm in the community.
