Giants’ Rookie Minicamp Kicking Competition Heats Up
A kicking showdown is shaping up at the Giants’ rookie minicamp. Undrafted rookie Dominic Zvada started strong by making all five of his field goal attempts, including a notable 55-yarder. This is just the beginning of what could become an intriguing battle against returning kicker Ben Sauls and former All-Pro Jason Sanders.
Head coach John Harbaugh expressed that the competition is already underway, mentioning, “It’s definitely going to be a competition from the get-go.” He emphasized that they had already seen a glimpse of Zvada’s ability, and he’s curious to see how it evolves.
Sanders, who signed a one-year free agent contract after sitting out last season due to a hip issue, adds another layer of unpredictability. Meanwhile, Sauls, also an undrafted rookie, had a solid finish last year, successfully converting all 15 of his kicks.
As for Zvada, he was once a standout at the University of Michigan, hitting 21-of-22 field goals in his best year, although he faced challenges in 2025. Harbaugh had some encouraging words, complimenting Zvada’s strong leg and stable kicking style.
The day also highlighted rookie cornerback Colton Hood, who made a significant play by intercepting a pass during practice. Reflecting on his instinct, Hood remarked, “We were just in Cover 2… I just broke the ball and made a play.” It was an impressive moment, but it left one to wonder if he took things a bit too far for a non-contact session. Hood light-heartedly shrugged it off, joking about needing to affirm his position.
As the team continues evaluations, Harbaugh appears optimistic about the depth on the defensive tackle position after drafting Bobby Jamison-Travis and acquiring veteran players. This upcoming season could hold a lot of surprises for the Giants as they piece together their roster.
Rounding out the day, the Giants welcomed three undrafted quarterbacks for tryouts, alongside a couple of veteran players. It’s all part of the ongoing search for talent as the team prepares for the challenges ahead.
