Trump Disappointed with Putin’s Stance on Peace Talks
President Donald Trump recently expressed that he is “very disappointed” with Russian President Vladimir Putin regarding the ongoing peace negotiations, which have already stretched over 50 days. He is now suggesting a new deadline of about 10 to 12 days.
In a later comment, Trump mentioned, “And we’re going to put tariffs on it,” hinting at further action in response to the situation.
Dmitry Medvedev, the vice-chairman of Russia’s Security Council, reacted to Trump’s remarks, implying that Trump is engaging in a sort of ultimatum game—between two timeframes—while reminding him that “Russia is not Israel or even Iran.” He insisted that Russia believes it is “right about everything” and will continue on its chosen path.
The discourse between Trump and Medvedev escalated, with online exchanges touching upon themes of nuclear warfare and the deployment of nuclear submarines.
Grigoli Gorosov, a political science professor at a St. Petersburg university, indicated that Trump’s critiques might stem from a desire to criticize someone within Russia while still wanting to negotiate with Putin.
On Thursday, Trump suggested that Russia and the U.S. should cease all business dealings, which prompted Medvedev to caution him, alluding that Trump is treading on dangerous ground.
Medvedev also made a dramatic reference in a Telegram post, suggesting that if Trump’s response was so nervous, then perhaps it indicates that “Russia is right about everything.” He added a note about “dead hands,” referencing the nuclear trigger system that could lead to a nuclear response if communications with Russia’s leaders are breached.
Colonel Sergei Karakayev, from the Russian strategic rocket forces, had previously commented on this system, asserting its readiness for combat.
Trump’s reaction to the mention of nuclear threats was one of concern. He instructed that two nuclear submarines be positioned appropriately, which he emphasized in a later statement, saying, “Words are extremely important and can often lead to unintended consequences.”
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth shared Trump’s statement, though neither provided specific details about the submarines’ deployment.
Earlier that day, Trump lamented the tragic loss of life in Ukraine, noting that around 20,000 Russian soldiers had died this month alone and commenting on the overall toll of the conflict on both sides.
This story is still developing.
