Unexpected turn: Progressive defeats frontrunner in Democratic congressional primary

Progressive Candidate Achieves Victory in New Jersey Primary

A progressive candidate supported by prominent left-leaning figures, including Senator Bernie Sanders and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, has won decisively in the Democratic Congressional primary for a traditionally blue district in New Jersey.

Analilia Mejia triumphed over former Congressman Tom Malinowski to secure the party’s nomination in New Jersey’s 11th Congressional District, as reported by the Associated Press.

On Tuesday, Malinowski took to X to announce his concession.

New House Democrat Reduces GOP Majority

Mejia and Malinowski were among 11 candidates in the Democratic primary, which aimed to fill the seat left vacant by Governor Mikie Sherrill’s resignation after her gubernatorial win in November.

The outcome of the primary has sparked considerable interest, marking it as an early battleground for the ongoing tension between progressive ideals and the mainstream Democratic Party.

Mejia, who served as Sanders’ national political director during the 2020 campaign, has been seen as a significant win for the anti-establishment left, following notable victories like that of New York City Mayor Zoran Mamdani in June 2025.

“Her economic policies favor progressive populism,” emphasized Representative Ro Khanna, adding, “She embodies the future!”

“We have to rebuild our party and address what’s happening across the nation. Our democracy needs restoration, and the economy shouldn’t just serve billionaires,” Mejia stated during her initial remarks to supporters.

Malinowski’s Campaign Faces Challenges

Malinowski, who served as assistant secretary of state during the Obama administration and held the congressional seat from 2018 until his re-election defeat in 2022, was considered a frontrunner in this contest.

However, he became the target of aggressive ad campaigns from the United Democracy Project, a super PAC linked to AIPAC, which disapproved of his stance on aid conditions for Israel. This spending exceeded $2.3 million despite AIPAC’s previous backing of Malinowski.

Interestingly, that strategy did not work to his advantage, as Mejia held a far more critical view towards Israel than he did.

The Democratic National Committee acknowledged Malinowski’s campaign with an email congratulating him on the night of the primary, which, amusingly, incorrectly heralded his victory.

Later in the evening, Mejia claimed a narrow lead against Malinowski, sharing a notable moment from history—President Harry Truman’s 1948 election victory, displayed through a famous image of him holding a newspaper headline incorrectly stating “Dewey Defeats Truman.”

Mejia garnered support from significant figures in the progressive community, with Sanders hosting a virtual rally just before the primary. In addition to Sanders and Ocasio-Cortez, she received backing from leaders like Elizabeth Warren and Pramila Jayapal.

The Progressive Change Campaign Committee lauded Mejia’s success, asserting that voters desire a Democratic Party that boldly faces powerful interests to advocate for working families.

PCCC co-founder Adam Green even remarked that he sensed a clear message from voters: they aren’t merely anti-Trump; instead, they aim to disrupt the current political and economic landscape.

Though Mejia emerged as a choice for the left, the moderate and center-left factions seemed to split the overall Democratic vote.

Looking ahead, Mejia will be competing against Randolph Mayor Joe Hathaway, the sole Republican candidate, in the special election set for April 16.

Although Hathaway is positioned as the underdog, it’s noteworthy that Sherrill had won her election in 2024 by a margin of 15 points, reflecting her stronghold within the district.

Republican Prospects in New Jersey

Interestingly, in the previous presidential election, Vice President Kamala Harris only managed a modest 8-point lead in this district, giving Republicans a glimmer of hope for a potential comeback.

Currently, New Jersey’s primary elections are unfolding amidst a narrow Republican majority in the House at 218-214.

Moreover, Republicans may have additional opportunities to reinforce their presence in the House before filling the New Jersey vacancy. A special election is due to replace former Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, following her recent retirement.

In this Georgia district, a considerable number of candidates—22 in total, among them 17 Republicans—are vying for election. If no candidate secures over 50% of the vote, a runoff will take place on April 7.

President Trump has already endorsed Republican Clay Fuller for this race, which could also influence the political dynamics as the elections unfold.
