Union Protests Begin Following Arrest of Leader During L.A. Riots

Union Association Calls for Justice in Arrest of Union Leader

AFL-CIO, the largest union association in the U.S., is urging activists to “demand justice” following the arrest of union leaders in Los Angeles. This incident occurred during a confrontation between ICE agents and protesters trying to halt the detainment of undocumented immigrants.

California President of SEIU, David Fuerta, was described by the AFL-CIO as being “hardly arrested” by ICE agents.

“Join us nationwide today to demand peaceful justice for our union brothers,” the organization stated, featuring images of Huerta.

On Action Network’s website, there are calls for Fuerta’s release, emphasizing the urgency to end ICE actions. Protesters have voiced their demand to “release David Fuerta and stop the ICE attacks.” Fuerta was reportedly injured during his detention last Friday in downtown Los Angeles.

Social media included a statement from a U.S. attorney for California’s Central District, who clarified the circumstances of Fuerta’s arrest: he allegedly obstructed a legal operation by blocking a federal vehicle and is set to face federal charges. The attorney was quite firm, saying, “Blocking a federal agent will lead to arrest—no one is above the law.”

Alongside this, video footage surfaced showing the chaotic scene as law enforcement took control during the incident.

SEIU California claimed that Fuerta was merely observing peacefully prior to his arrest.

“ICE has made a grave mistake. They chose the wrong state, the wrong people, and the wrong union,” the organization asserted, reinforcing its support for Fuerta and the 750,000 SEIU workers backing him.

AFL-CIO echoed these sentiments, stating that nearly 15 million workers are calling for his immediate release. In a social media post, they highlighted that Fuerta was recognized as a “Champion of Change” on the White House website under former President Barack Obama’s leadership.

Further video evidence captured the moment Fuerta was detained, depicting a struggle as law enforcement restrained him.

There’s a perception that AFL-CIO is aligning more with immigrant rights rather than focusing solely on American workers. Current discussions point out that “the entire workforce faces challenges in supporting families, and instilling fear will only exacerbate exploitation. Immigrants deserve the right to work without fear of retribution.”
