SEIU’s $1.2 Million Tab Amid Protests Against Trump’s Legislation
The Service Employees International Union (SEIU) has reportedly spent $1.2 million at Washington, D.C.’s Salamander Hotel while opposing President Donald Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill Act, as revealed in a report by the Center for Union Facts (CUF).
Social media posts indicated that SEIU members convened in D.C. from June 23 to June 29, 2025, to challenge lawmakers and protest proposed tax and spending cuts in Congress. A Department of Labor disclosure from June 30, 2025, reveals the union attributed the $1.2 million in membership dues to “support for political activities.”
The One Big Beautiful Bill Act formed a significant part of President Trump’s economic strategy during his second term, with advocates highlighting tax breaks for service workers and small businesses. However, critics pointed out that the bill’s cuts to healthcare and food subsidies could negatively impact lower-income Americans. This divide led to substantial pushback, including a notable protest organized by the SEIU, though Trump enacted the bill into law over the July 4 weekend in 2025.
“It’s disappointing to see union leadership indulging in extravagant spending at the cost of our members, who contribute millions in dues yearly,” stated Rep. Tim Walberg, chair of the House Education and Labor Committee. “These privileged individuals have opted for luxury accommodations while opposing a bill that aims to reduce expenses for workers and their families, including their own members. SEIU leaders should prioritize genuine support for working families.”
Reaction to Boycott Threat from DC Restaurant Group
SEIU, when contacted, did not provide a comment to Fox News Digital.
During the last week of June 2025, SEIU’s social media showcased images of union members outside the hotel’s event spaces and rooms, according to CUF records. “It feels like SEIU is advocating for economic fairness by day, yet unwinding in luxurious hotels at night using their members’ funds,” remarked Charice Bozzello, CUF’s public affairs director. “So much for solidarity.”
CUF is an organization that critiques labor unions, while SEIU represents about 2 million workers in healthcare, public service, and other sectors.
The Salamander Hotel is noted in the Michelin Guide as a luxury venue, providing impressive views and high-end amenities, including the Salamander Spa, touted for its extensive range of therapies.
In addition to its lavish offerings, the hotel features several upscale dining options, including one helmed by celebrity chef Kwame Onwuachi.
CUF has raised questions about the high expenditures at five-star establishments by SEIU, especially when there are more budget-friendly options available.
According to SEIU, union dues are vital for negotiating better pay and benefits for members, offering services like legal support and training.
SEIU members were among those arrested by U.S. Capitol Police on June 25, 2025, for occupying the Senate Building to protest the One Big Beautiful Bill Act.
The union also incurred additional expenses at other luxury resorts in 2025. This included $32,806 at the Salamander Resort in Middleburg, Virginia, for “staff meetings and training,” a venue that consistently ranks among the country’s best.
