Rutgers University Faculty Union Defends Professor Amid Controversy
The faculty union at Rutgers University has come out in support of professor Mark Bray, who has been criticized by the university’s Turning Point USA chapter, which has initiated a petition for his dismissal. This statement was made public on Tuesday.
In a post on X, the Rutgers University AAUP-AFT academic union stated, “Rutgers University professor and AAUP-AFT member Dr. Mark Bray is under attack due to public scholarships.” They further claimed that as a consequence of this backlash, Bray had to leave the country for his own safety.
The union expressed solidarity with Bray and his partner, emphasizing the importance of academic freedom and the First Amendment rights of all individuals in higher education. They stressed their commitment to advocating for colleagues in the face of such challenges.
Mark Bray, an assistant professor, is facing scrutiny for his past statements supporting Antifa. Recently, he relocated abroad “for security reasons,” having reported identity exposure and receiving multiple death threats related to his views.
The controversy surrounding Bray has escalated, as his supporters criticize the Turning Point USA chapter for allegedly targeting faculty members nationwide in a bid to suppress unorthodox viewpoints. In a statement earlier this month, the AAUP-AFT denounced the petition against Bray as a violation of academic freedom.
Whitney Strub, a colleague of Bray and a faculty member at Rutgers, highlighted the broader implications of this situation on academic discourse and expressed concern over the environment of hostility that professors face from organized groups.
In response, Megan Doyle, a student and treasurer of Turning Point USA, labeled the union’s statement as defamatory. Doyle argued that the petition was merely an expression of student voices, claiming that opposition to Bray’s views, which he described as hostile toward conservatives, is being misinterpreted as an attack.
Eva Kwan, outreach coordinator for Turning Point, remarked that the union’s depiction of events reveals their attempts to control the narrative around Bray and his actions. She noted that advocating for violence under certain circumstances is not protected as free speech.
As the situation unfolds, comments from both the university administration and Bray are anticipated.
