CEO Brian Thompson said: united health groupinsurance department was fatally shot Wednesday morning in midtown Manhattan, a person familiar with the matter told CNBC.
UnitedHealth Group canceled investors the day after reports of the shooting emerged. Mr. Thompson led United Healthcare, the largest private health insurance company in the United States.
Police are investigating the shooting as a targeted attack and believe a silencer may have been used, a person familiar with the matter said. They described the suspect as a white male wearing a ski mask and carrying a backpack.

A spokesperson for the New York City Police Department's Deputy Commissioner of Public Affairs confirmed that a 50-year-old man was shot and killed in midtown Manhattan at 6:46 a.m. ET on Wednesday. However, a spokesperson did not confirm the man's identity.
A spokesperson said the man was taken to Mount Sinai West Hospital in critical condition, where he was pronounced dead. No arrests have been made and the investigation is ongoing, it added.
UnitedHealth Group was holding an investor day at the New York Hilton Hotel in Midtown. UnitedHealth Group did not respond to a request for comment.
The company did not confirm the shooting occurred on its investor day.
“Unfortunately, as some of you may know, one of our team members is facing a very serious medical situation,” a UnitedHealth Group staff member said on an investor day, according to records. Ta. “As a result, we regret to inform you that we have decided to end today's event. We hope you understand.”
