Luigi Mangione, a suspect in the 2024 assassination of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, has filed a motion in a New York court seeking to appear without handcuffs or a bulletproof vest. The motion, submitted to Judge Gregory Caro, pertains to a scheduled appearance on June 26.
In the request, Mangione’s legal team argues that these security measures reinforce a negative public image, suggesting that he is dangerous. They believe this portrayal undermines his presumption of innocence, especially considering how such visuals are often captured by the media.
They assert that since Mangione’s arrest in December 2024, he has not posed any security issues, cooperating fully with law enforcement. His defense highlights that he interacts with his attorneys daily without being restrained, and they’re pushing to have him sit at the defense table in standard attire during court proceedings.
Additionally, the defense underscores the inconsistency of requiring him to wear a bulletproof vest, especially when he wasn’t restrained during federal proceedings where he faces potential death penalties.
The background of the case is rather serious. Mangione’s alleged involvement in Thompson’s assassination occurred outside a hotel in New York City on December 4, 2024. Police discovered bullet casings and notes with terms related to insurance disputes at the crime scene, implying a potential motive tied to Thompson’s work.
After his arrest in Altoona, Pennsylvania, Mangione faced several charges, ranging from murder to firearm-related offenses. If convicted, he could be subject to severe penalties, including the possibility of a death sentence.
His next appearance in state court is set for June 26, while a federal court session is scheduled for December 5.
