UnitedHealthcare lawsuit claims Guardian is attempting to benefit from CEO’s murder

UnitedHealthcare Sues Parents Over Claims

UnitedHealthcare has initiated a lawsuit against parents, as reported on May 21 by Guardian US, which stated that the healthcare giant may have cut costs to the detriment of nursing home residents.

The lawsuit, filed on a Wednesday, accuses the Guardian of intentionally disseminating false information to exploit media attention surrounding the murder of their then-CEO in New York last year. UnitedHealthcare contends that the publication misrepresented the context of an email and distorted specific medical events mentioned in the report.

The complaint includes a statement asserting, “The Guardian was aware that these allegations were incorrect, yet they chose to make them public in a manner that seeks to exploit the tragic assassination of Brian Thompson, the former CEO of UnitedHealthcare.”

UnitedHealthcare has engaged Clare Locke, a law firm known for pursuing lawsuits aimed at protecting reputational integrity against media entities.

In a strong response shared with Semafor, the Guardian maintained its position, stating that the report was founded on extensive documentation and legal records. They emphasized their reliance on independent reports derived from numerous business and patient records, publicly filed lawsuits, and interviews with over 20 current and former United employees, along with information provided by UnitedHealthcare over several weeks. The Guardian expressed outrage over UnitedHealthcare’s reliance on what they termed misleading claims and legal intimidation.

UnitedHealthcare has faced challenges in recent months following the murder of its former CEO. Recently, the company announced plans to replace CEO Andrew Whitty after revealing profits that fell short of expectations and uncertain forecasts for 2025. Reports also indicate that UnitedHealthcare is currently under scrutiny from multiple Department of Justice investigations related to potential Medicare fraud.
