Closure of Lost Continent at Universal Orlando Begins

After more than 25 years, Lost Continent, a renowned section of Universal Orlando, is starting its phased closure at Islands of Adventure.

Demolition efforts have already kicked off, with reports indicating that a local news helicopter captured footage of an excavator working next to debris.

A representative from Universal Orlando mentioned, “In the coming months, attractions and venues within Lost Continent will continue to close permanently to allow for new themed areas.” They specified that Mythos Restaurant will shut down in 2027.

When it opened in 1999, Lost Continent played a significant role in shaping the early identity of Islands of Adventure, featuring its mythologically inspired designs, impressive stone structures, and deep-rooted narratives linked to ancient myths.

Universal Orlando has described this area as one of the most atmospheric locations at the resort, blending fantasy, adventure, modern technology, and live entertainment.

There were numerous beloved attractions here, including the Duel Dragon roller coaster, which was later reimagined as Dragon Challenge after the launch of The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. This coaster was notable for its intricate layout and thrilling near-miss effects.

Another key attraction, Wrath of Poseidon, captivated visitors with its striking water tunnels and fire effects, along with live performances.

However, over the last 15 years, Universal has been gradually reducing offerings in this area.

For instance, the Duel Dragons coaster was transformed into Dragon Challenge in 2010, coinciding with the development of the adjacent Wizarding World. It eventually closed in 2017, giving way to Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Bike Adventure, which has quickly become a guest favorite.

The live stunt show, “The 8th Voyage of Sinbad,” closed its doors in 2018, and now Poseidon’s Fury is set to shut down in 2023, as noted on Universal’s attractions page.

Despite the impending closures, Mythos Restaurant will remain operational until 2027 as part of the resort’s gradual transition.

Universal Orlando continues to evolve, preparing for new experiences—including updated dining options and themed areas, as highlighted in a recent statement.

In addition, a temporary closure has been announced for the horror makeup show at Universal Studios, Florida, in anticipation of a revamped experience meant to blend classic and modern horror themes.

Hogwarts Castle, located in Islands of Adventure, has also been undergoing maintenance in recent times, as reported.

In 2027, the resort plans to unveil Fast & Furious Hollywood Drift, a roller coaster inspired by the popular movie franchise.

The decision to demolish Lost Continent has elicited a range of reactions from park visitors. One Reddit user expressed support, saying, “It was needed so I’m glad it’s finally happening. I mean, the two attractions have been closed for 8 and 3 years.”

On the flip side, many fans expressed sorrow over the closure. One user on TikTok stated, “Goodbye Lost Continent, you will always be my favorite show.” Another added, “Rest in Peace Lost Continent. Thank you for everything,” while a third noted, “It’s the end of an era.”
