University at Buffalo graduate Jean Paul Al Arab takes the stage at graduation with his son while being pursued by police.

A Memorable Graduation Moment

In a touching scene, a college graduate from Buffalo, accompanied by his young son, made an unforgettable entrance at his graduation ceremony.

Jean Paul Al Arab had vowed to walk across the stage with his child, and he fulfilled that promise on Sunday at the university’s ceremony. Despite the looming threat of being stopped by security, he confidently embraced his toddler and celebrated his achievement.

Al Arab, who earned a degree in criminology, dashed onto the stage when his name was called, his son proudly wearing a matching blue cap and gown.

“I had to run. I promised I would walk with him,” Al Arab recalled during an interview.

As security and police attempted to intervene, they were met with the cheers of a supportive crowd that rallied behind the father and son duo.

While shaking hands with school officials, Al Arab was aware that police officers awaited him just behind. The crowd, noticeably displeased, reacted with boos directed at law enforcement’s attempts to control the situation.

This heartfelt moment was, according to Al Arab, a last-minute decision. He had asked if he could bring his son on stage during preparation, and was told it was acceptable.

“But when the moment came, they tried to stop me and even called the police. The crowd really made a difference,” he explained, acknowledging the cheers that gave him the encouragement to continue.

Balancing two jobs overnight, Al Arab’s dedication was clear. He described his pride in graduating with his son beside him, stating, “We did it!” Although he received his diploma in fall 2024, he seized the chance to officially walk across the stage during the spring ceremony.

The university had expressed concerns about safety, claiming that certain rules were in place to ensure a smooth experience for all graduates.

Despite attempts to halt the duo, social media users widely supported Al Arab’s emotional display with comments like, “If you want to achieve your dreams, there shouldn’t be a problem.”

Another user pointed out the inconsistency of policies, noting it was unusual that some parents were permitted to walk with their babies during past ceremonies. Others suggested that the police officer should have made way, allowing Al Arab to relish his moment.

Though his son donned the traditional attire, he did not receive a diploma, feeling too shy in front of the crowd. Reflecting on the event, a school representative hoped the boy would one day follow in his father’s footsteps and again walk the stage.
