University of Chicago Newspaper Tracks ICE Activity

The Maroon, the University of Chicago’s school newspaper, launched an interactive map earlier this month to track ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) activities in the local area, inviting readers to contribute tips. They’ve been monitoring ICE sightings since October 21st.

The map, created in response to ICE’s recent Operation Midway Blitz, shows where ICE agents have been seen in neighborhoods like Hyde Park, Kenwood, and Woodlawn. Each location on the map features an icon that links to the address of the sighting, along with the date and a brief description of the event.

In their call for community involvement, the Maroon stated they are gathering evidence—like time-stamped photos and videos—to corroborate reports of ICE activities. The article encourages readers to reach out to the newspaper’s editor via email or a secure messaging app, assuring anonymity for anyone who shares information.

In recent months, ICE has encountered several confrontations in Chicago, leading to a significant spike in threats against its agents. Meanwhile, left-wing activists have been actively protesting against immigration enforcement in the suburbs.

This situation gained further attention following the arrest of Associate Professor Eman Abdelhadi, who faced charges of assaulting a police officer during an anti-ICE protest. She had previously condemned ICE on a podcast, arguing the agency disrupts local communities.

Abdelhadi’s employment status remains unclear, as university officials have not commented on whether she is still teaching. The University of Chicago indicated that the Maroon operates independently and directed inquiries back to the publication, whose editors have also chosen not to comment.
