University of Delaware Student Arrested for Alleged Attack Plot
A student from the University of Delaware has been accused of planning an attack on the university’s police department. Luqman Khan, who is 25 years old, was taken into custody last week in New Castle County. Authorities reportedly discovered a loaded .357-caliber Glock handgun, along with 27 rounds of ammunition in his possession. Additionally, they found three magazines, ballistic plates, and notes detailing his intentions, according to the Department of Justice.
The handwritten notes included discussions about various weapons, potential usage in the planned attack, and strategies to avoid being detected by law enforcement after the event. Notably, the notebook had names of university police officers and maps of the building’s entrances and exits labeled with “UD Police Department.”
Further investigation revealed that during a search of Khan’s home, the FBI found a Glock 19 9mm handgun modified with an illegal machine gun conversion device often referred to as a “switch.” Also recovered were a .556 rifle with a scope, a tactical vest containing numerous magazines, hollow-point rounds, and an additional ballistic plate.
Khan has been federally charged with illegal possession of a machine gun, which could lead to a prison sentence of up to ten years if convicted. The university’s Interim President, Laura Carlson, communicated with the campus community, indicating that Khan was an undergraduate student. She mentioned that the university had temporarily banned students from all campuses until the legal issues were addressed.
Despite the alarming situation, Carlson reassured everyone, stating, “There is no known or imminent threat to the University of Delaware community.” She also confirmed that authorities had shared details about the plot targeting the police department.
“This is scary for all of us,” Carlson acknowledged, emphasizing the collaborative effort of federal and state law enforcement in addressing a serious threat before it escalated.
