University of Georgia Student Survives Eight-Story Fall

A 21-year-old student from the University of Georgia managed to survive an eight-story fall from an apartment window, reportedly after falling through a screen while dancing near the open window, as detailed in a police report.

The incident occurred around 7:37 p.m. Saturday at the Rambler Athens apartment complex located on West Broad Street. Witnesses informed the police that Kristin Sargent had been dancing on a couch or air mattress when she fell through the screen, ultimately landing near a pool in the courtyard below, on the second floor.

According to police findings, it appears that Sargent hit a metal bench during her fall. An officer noted blood on the bench’s cushion and discovered that one of its armrests had broken off.

Lt. Katie Jenkins from the Athens-Clarke County Police Department stated that investigators believe the bench somewhat cushioned Sargent’s landing. She further clarified that the incident is not being treated as a criminal case, and, thankfully, Sargent is reported to be alert and conscious.

Emergency audio recordings revealed the chaos that followed Sargent’s fall. One caller frantically told dispatch, “We’re on the eighth floor. My friend just fell out of the window. She’s on the ground. We were dancing, and she just fell out of the window.”

A dispatcher then inquired if Sargent was moving. The response was, “No, she’s not.” The caller could see Sargent on the ground but was unsure if her eyes were open.

As first responders arrived, they transported Sargent to the hospital, where she was interviewed alongside witnesses, while forensic teams examined the scene.

The police report suggests that the fall was accidental, and Sargent is noted as a resident of the apartment where the incident happened. While police did not provide specifics on the window or the safety features that might have been there, they indicated that no foul play is suspected.

Rambler Athens has previously mentioned that they are reviewing the incident. Attempts to contact the apartment complex for additional details regarding any safety measures in place at the time of the fall were made, but responses were not immediate.
