Hit-and-Run Claims Life of University of Kansas Student

A student at the University of Kansas tragically lost her life in a hit-and-run incident while she was out jogging, according to local authorities.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office reported that 20-year-old Elsa McGrane was struck by a pickup truck on a Thursday evening. The driver fled the scene, but was later identified as 36-year-old William Ray Klingler. The accident occurred near Lawrence Regional Airport around 6 p.m., but sadly, McGrane’s body was not found until early the next morning, at 3:35 a.m., when a passing motorist called 911. Klingler was taken into custody days later after police sought help from the community.

McGrane, who was studying pre-medicine, was set to graduate in 2026.

“Our hearts go out to Elsa’s family and friends in this incredibly tragic situation,” the sheriff’s office conveyed.

The Chi Omega sorority, of which McGrane was a member, shared a heartfelt tribute on social media. They described her as a person of integrity and warmth, someone who spread kindness and made everyone around her feel valued. The sorority also acknowledged her role as house manager, highlighting the compassion she exhibited in that position.

“Elsa was the kind of person we all wanted to be: honest, kind, and full of light,” the tribute stated, emphasizing the deep impact she had on those around her.

Klingler has yet to face charges but is currently held on suspicion of manslaughter, as investigations continue.
