University of Maryland to Host Kermit the Frog as Commencement Speaker
The University of Maryland (UMD) has announced an unusual choice for its commencement speaker this Thursday—Kermit the Frog, a beloved character known for his family-friendly appeal and commitment to environmental causes.
A YouTube video released by the university featured Kermit, who describes himself as an “Amphibitarian,” discussing his new role. He was introduced as an “environmental advocate,” “bestselling author,” and noted figures in children’s entertainment, including awards like the Peabody. Kermit made a cheeky, albeit nervous, introduction in front of a crimson curtain, exclaiming, “Um, I think I am.”
Interestingly, Kermit has connections to the university; Jim Henson, his creator, graduated from UMD in 1960 with a degree in home economics. Henson, who passed away at a young age, was deeply involved in theatre during his time at the university.
Throughout his career, Henson developed various iconic characters and was instrumental in shows like Sesame Street and The Muppet Show. He even ran a silkscreen printing business while still a student. Henson met his first performance partner, Jane Nebel, during a puppet show course.
Kermit is expected to return to UMD after he sold out a lecture series at the university in the fall of 2024. This time, he’ll engage with graduates from various classes scheduled for summer, winter, and spring of 2025.
UMD President Daryl J. Pines expressed enthusiasm about Kermit’s presence, saying that students and their families would appreciate his optimism and insights during such a pivotal moment in their lives. Pines remarked on the unique pride the university feels for Henson’s legacy, welcoming Kermit back after 65 years.
During his remarks, Kermit hinted at the joy of speaking with graduates, affirming his intent to uplift the class of 2025 as they embark on their journeys. “I know that the class of 2025 will jump into the world and become a better place,” he stated, adding that he’d like to provide some words of encouragement.
As for other Muppet buddies like Miss Piggy, it’s still uncertain if they will make an appearance during the ceremony.
UMD has also celebrated Henson’s contributions through statues and events, with a notable statue of him and Kermit installed in 2003. However, the university, Muppet Company, and Disney have yet to comment on this recent development.
