The University of Maryland shut down sorority and fraternity social activities Friday amid an investigation into dangerous recruitment.
Officials announced the suspension by sending cease and desist letters to all chapters of the Fraternity Council and Panhellenic Society, representing 21 fraternities and 16 sororities, respectively.
The letter did not specifically mention hazing, but claimed Greek Life groups engaged in “activities that threaten the safety and well-being of members of the university community.”
The letter does not mention any alleged wrongdoing.
The suspension will remain in place indefinitely while the university investigates multiple reports of unsafe activity at the chapter’s ongoing new member induction events.
IFC and PHA chapters are prohibited from communicating with new members and will be subject to “disciplinary action” if they violate the terms of the order.

The University of Maryland reserves the right to interfere with fraternity and sorority activities if there are reports of hazing, even if it occurs off-campus, the school said.
