University of Michigan Stops Offering Sex Medicines for Minors
This week, the University of Michigan announced that it will cease providing sex medicines to minors. This decision follows increasing pressure from the Trump administration.
The Department of Justice revealed that over 20 subpoenas had been issued for entities involved in administering transgender medical procedures for children. Michigan Medicine stated it is among those receiving a subpoena.
“In light of this investigation and an escalation of external threats, we will no longer provide gender-affirming hormone therapy and adolescent blockers for minors,” a medical official from Michigan said.
The statement went on to acknowledge the significant impact this decision will have on patients and their communities. “We are committed to supporting the well-being of our patients and families during this transition,” it continued. “We deeply appreciate our team members for their exceptional dedication to providing quality care as we navigate these changes together.”
Chad Mizzel, Chief of Staff at the DOJ, praised the announcement as a “massive victory for child safety and common sense.”
“The Department of Justice has been investigating hospitals that perform surgeries or chemical treatments on children under the label of ‘gender-affirming care’. Today, the University of Michigan confirmed it would not provide minors with such therapies,” Mizzel posted on X.
“This is a significant win for children’s safety. The University of Michigan is just one of many that have restricted or halted these procedures since January.” He emphasized the role of the Trump administration in protecting children from policies deemed harmful.
However, Michigan’s Democratic Attorney General, Dana Nessel, criticized the university’s decision, calling it “dangerous and potentially illegal.” Nessel noted that the university’s choice to limit healthcare options for transgender patients succumbs to political pressure.
“This acquiescence is not the standard patients expect from leading medical institutions,” she stated. Nessel also mentioned that her office would explore potential legal options if Michigan law is being violated.
Nessel added, “This administration often relies on compliance without resistance, sacrificing principles at the expense of vulnerable populations, including children.”
She is one of several Democratic Attorneys General suing the Trump administration for a January executive order that sought to withdraw federal support for gender transition in minors. A federal judge has partially blocked the enforcement of this order, but legal challenges continue.
