Tragic Discovery of University of Michigan Student
A student from the University of Michigan was found dead following a search that lasted for a day. This situation began when he left a fraternity party dressed only in a T-shirt and jeans, braving subzero temperatures.
Lukas Mattsson, a 19-year-old engineering student, was last seen around 1 a.m. on January 23, when the weather had plunged to 0 degrees Celsius. His body was located on Saturday evening after approximately 20 hours of searching under severe cold conditions, as reported by the police.
Authorities confirmed that there were no apparent signs of trauma on Mattsson’s body, and foul play is not suspected. The Washtenaw County Coroner’s Office is expected to determine the exact cause and manner of his death.
A missing person report was filed with the Ann Arbor Police Department about 15 hours after he was noted missing. The extensive search, which took place in chilling temperatures, involved police units from both the Ann Arbor department and the University of Michigan’s Department of Public Safety. The search also utilized drones from the police department.
Mattsson was seen wearing a light-colored T-shirt, blue jeans, and white sneakers when he went missing from the fraternity party, officials said. The university community is mourning his loss. In a statement, interim president Domenico Grasso expressed condolences, stating, “Our deepest sympathies go out to Lucas’ family, friends, and everyone who loved him.” He cautioned against the spread of “misinformation” surrounding the circumstances of Mattsson’s death.
Grasso also indicated that the university will review the events of that night to better understand the situation and perhaps prevent such tragedies in the future. He expressed gratitude for the support shown by the community, particularly those who searched for Mattsson in such harsh weather.
