University of Nebraska at Kearney Cancels Teacher Training for Transgender Support

The University of Nebraska at Kearney has decided to cancel a teacher training module that focused on transgender issues following significant online backlash and criticism from Republican Governor Jim Pillen.

This training, titled “How can we move from support to empowerment for trans-spectrum students?” was part of the school’s Monday Morning Mentor Series. It referenced a 20-minute program created by a North Carolina university aimed at helping professors cultivate more inclusive classrooms.

The initiative drew attention when the account Libs on TikTok shared details of the training on X, condemning it and advocating for budget cuts to the institution.

“The University of Nebraska at Kearney wants faculty to attend a conference to learn about supporting trans students and creating DEI-inclusive classrooms,” the account stated. “This university is using our tax dollars…refund them…I’m tired of this garbage.”

Pillen echoed these sentiments on Monday, denouncing the training.

“This ridiculous act is completely irrelevant and destructive to the educational mission of the University of Nebraska, and out of sync with the values of the state it serves,” he posted on X. He urged university leaders to eliminate this and similar programs from their curriculum.

He warned that failing to respond could result in investigations and cuts to funding.

“Unless universities keep their ranks in check and remove the woke aspects that hinder many elite educational institutions, they risk investigations, loss of funding, and most importantly, the trust of the communities they serve,” he added.

The university announced the removal of the module on Tuesday, as reported by Nebraska Public Media.

UNK asserted its “commitment to academic rigor and student success through effective instruction and providing a welcoming environment for all students,” and confirmed that the controversial modules had been taken down, according to the news outlet.

Pillen deemed the university’s action “good news,” saying, “Following my post last night, the University of Nebraska at Kearney removed the offensive content. That’s encouraging.”

He emphasized that educational institutions should align with public expectations, stating, “The mission of education in America is not to promote woke indoctrination but to cultivate critical thinkers who are prepared to become the next generation of leaders and innovators.”
