Trash Accumulates on Brooklyn Bridge

Recently, the iconic Brooklyn Bridge has seen an unusual display of trash dangling from its fences, including tampons, condoms, and even dirty tissues. This bizarre trend has, oddly enough, created a backdrop for some Instagram selfies.

Residents have noticed an uptick in litter consisting of not just the aforementioned items, but also panties, used Band-Aids, and hair ties. According to the New York Post, many locals are voicing their frustration over the unsightly trash build-up, which seems to have worsened lately.

“Welcome to the ‘big cesspool’ that was once an apple,” one resident remarked. Ellen Baum, a frequent commuter to the bridge, expressed her distaste: “I walk across this bridge almost every day, and one day I thought, ‘I’ve had enough!’” She’s even been sharing her cleanup efforts on social media.

Another Brooklynite, Boehm, described the scene as “totally disgusting” but draws a line at labeling the trash wall as art. “The interactions and conversations that take place on the bridge are art. The bridge itself is art,” she said, adding, “You literally don’t have to put trash there.”

The Department of Transportation didn’t have specific numbers on littering incidents on the bridge or how often it gets cleaned. A spokesperson mentioned, “The iconic Brooklyn Bridge has been called ‘America’s Eiffel Tower,’ and cluttering it with debris detracts from the enjoyment of everyone who uses it.”

People online have not held back in their reactions to what some are dubbing “Garbage Bridge.” One user reminisced about how bridges used to be secure from such displays, while another lamented the treatment of a world-class landmark as though it were a trash can. “I’m sick of New York,” shared a user, reflecting on a negative experience with the city’s cleanliness.

In a more humorous take, someone quipped about the “amount of DNA” present, suggesting it could help solve some unresolved cases. It seems opinions vary widely, showcasing the different connections people have to what is, after all, a symbol of the city.

This visible trash problem reflects broader concerns about urban cleanliness and the maintenance of such historic landmarks, stirring conversations both offline and online.
