Unprecedented Marilyn Monroe lookalike competition in Palm Springs

Gathering to Celebrate Marilyn Monroe’s Birthday

As Marilyn Monroe’s significant birthday draws near, fans are coming together to honor the iconic blonde in an effort to set a Guinness World Record for the largest assembly of lookalikes.

On Saturday, around 1,000 enthusiasts gathered in Palm Springs to pay tribute to the legendary actress ahead of her 100th birthday on June 1st.

The aim was to break the existing record of 254 Marilyn lookalikes, which was set in 2020, creating a vibrant display of “an ocean of white dresses and blonde curls.” The event is known as the “Marilyn’s 100th Anniversary and World Record Challenge.”

The event, termed “The Great Marilyn Documentation Attempt,” turned into a lively celebration with attendees taking part around the “Eternal Marilyn” statue located in a downtown park.

This notable 26-foot-tall sculpture by Seward Johnson has become a significant point of interest since its first appearance in Palm Springs.

People of various ages turned out for the occasion, many sporting platinum blonde hairstyles and elaborate blonde wigs.

The area was bustling with contestants wearing replicas of Monroe’s famous white halter-neck dress from the 1955 film “The Seven Year Itch,” which features one of the movie’s most memorable scenes where Monroe’s character reportedly has her skirt blown up by a passing subway train.

Participants paid a $75 entry fee, which allowed them to win a signature white ‘Subway’ dress, a platinum blonde wig, cat-eye sunglasses, and even a martini glass.

To count towards the record, attendees needed to don red lipstick and a classic Marilyn costume, as reported by KSEQ.

This record-breaking event is part of a broader weekend festival celebrating the glamorous movie legends who knew how to light up the screen.

Organizers noted that hitting this record wasn’t just about looking the part. When participants arrived, they scanned a QR code to confirm their presence.

Ron DeHart, one of the organizers, expressed optimism about breaking the record, estimating that over 1,000 people joined the record attempt. Currently, the record belongs to an Australian group with 254 participants from 2020.

Marilyn Monroe, born Norma Jeane Mortenson on June 1, 1926, overcame a challenging childhood and a brief marriage at 16 to become a global icon, leaving a lasting legacy long after her untimely passing from an overdose in 1962 at just 36.

The three-day celebration in Palm Springs will include live performances, food vendors, and a Marilyn Monroe-themed pop-up event, alongside a film recognition honoring her lasting impact on cinema.
