Unpredictable events are influencing the destinies of both Trump and the Democrats.

It seems like a nightmare for politicians when they can’t control their narratives. When it comes to Trump, his chances for the Nobel Peace Prize have taken a hit. He couldn’t manage to stop ongoing conflicts or avert new ones. On the other side of the aisle, Democrats have criticized Trump’s handling of immigration policies, especially after violent protests erupted in Los Angeles against what some see as excessive use of power.

As Trump approached his second term, he claimed he would resolve the war in Ukraine and negotiate a ceasefire in Gaza. Yet, instead of achieving these goals, a new conflict flared up under his watch.

In his first term, Trump was known for strengthening ties with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, such as moving the U.S. Embassy to Jerusalem and acknowledging Israel’s claim over the Golan Heights. However, during his second term, it appears that Netanyahu has sidelined him. Trump had urged Israel not to engage in strikes against Iran while negotiations involving nuclear programs were ongoing.

“I don’t want them to do that, as it could escalate things,” Trump stated. Still, Netanyahu went ahead and executed strikes, even eliminating a prominent Iranian figure amidst stalled negotiations.

Add to this touchy situation the ongoing conflict involving Houthis and a heavy trade feud with China, where China’s leadership seems to have a better grip on America’s reliance on rare earth elements than Trump does. It’s curious—despite America’s considerable military and economic power, Trump’s current term appears riddled with challenges and a lack of effective leadership.

The Democrats argue, quite reasonably, that Trump has been dehumanizing undocumented immigrants, who often contribute positively to their communities. However, to gain an advantage over the Republicans, they could use more than just frustration; they’ll need dignified, peaceful protests and smart immigration policies that align with the public’s genuine concerns about safety and border control. Instead, the recent scenes of chaos in downtown Los Angeles—where Waymo cars were torched and federal buildings endured damage—overshadowed the intended message about abuse of authority.

The Democrats are still figuring out their strategy on immigration. Governor Gavin Newsom delivered a speech titled “Defense of Democracy” after Trump sent additional forces to Los Angeles. While it was eloquent, listeners had to pay close attention to catch the part about deporting “immigrants with serious criminal records and those with final deportation orders.”

So, Newsom might be addressing important issues, but the tense atmosphere created by the National Guard and ongoing protests dominated headlines. The situation feels precarious for the Democrats, teetering on the edge of a disaster.

Newsom and fellow party leaders are advocating for restraint. Yet, it’s all too easy for Americans to turn against Democrats when various groups they can’t control act out violently. Looking back, the 1970 shooting of four unarmed Kent State students by national guardsmen during war protests incited outrage on campuses. However, surprisingly, it was the students who were condemned more than those in uniform.

Trump has hinted that he may deploy more troops in other cities, calling the move in LA “probably the first of many.” If more unrest occurs, he might find himself with the justification needed for a military presence, even if local governments push back.

If that unfolds, it might overshadow any positive rhetoric on defending democracy.
