Violence Erupts in Michoacán Following Mayor’s Assassination

In Michoacán, Mexico, unrest has escalated after the murder of local mayor Carlos Manzo, who was renowned for his strong opposition to crime and drug cartels. Recent protests have seen locals demanding the removal of politicians believed to be linked to cartels, culminating in a fire at Apatzingan City Hall.

The situation began last weekend when Manzo was shot during a Day of the Dead celebration. Reports indicate he was targeted by a gunman assisted by two other men. Manzo had garnered significant support for his aggressive approach against drug cartels, actively instructing local police to confront them directly and revealing connections between criminal organizations and various state and federal officials.

By Monday afternoon, hundreds gathered outside the governor’s residence in Morelia, calling for the resignation of Governor Alfredo Ramírez Vedra. Interestingly, he is related to a convicted drug lord and a second-generation drug trafficker. The protests soon escalated into violence, with demonstrators vandalizing the Government Palace and setting parts of it on fire.

The unrest continued into Tuesday night, when protesters stormed Uruapan’s city hall, igniting it in flames and displaying banners demanding the ouster of the local mayor, Fanny Arreola, who is also affiliated with the Morena party. Critics have pointed out that Arreola has been promoting narco corridos—music that glorifies the cartel lifestyle—during city events, which has further enraged the community.
