Up-and-coming progressive declined to make luxury condo payment

Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-Texas), known for her progressive stance and rumored aspirations for the Senate, has an outstanding unpaid lien of over $3,000 linked to a luxury condo in Dallas, as indicated by county records. The lien notice, dated April 11, 2024, reveals that she owes Westside Condominium Association $3,047.79.

This notice outlines that Crockett “is in default of his obligation to pay” the assessed value and related costs associated with the property. Consequently, the lien grants the Westside Condominium Association a legal claim to the unit, blocking Crockett from selling or transferring it until the debt is settled.

Recently, a report criticized Crockett, describing a “toxic staff environment.” There were claims that some staffers even found themselves in tears due to the pressure. The Dallas County Clerk’s Office confirmed that there’s no record of the lien being paid off, suggesting she has yet to address this financial obligation.

Attempts to get clarification from Crockett’s office regarding the unpaid lien went unanswered up till the deadline for this report. She acquired the condominium in May 2014 and is listed as a voter at that location.

The condo complex, as outlined on a real estate site, is a gated community boasting amenities like a pool and a clubhouse, marketed as a “refreshing retreat.” Homeowners’ association fees range from $222 to $403, covering maintenance and utilities.

Some observers are sounding alarms about Crockett’s candidacy for the Texas Senate, indicating her recent actions reflect poorly. A Democratic strategy expert stated, “The last few weeks have shown that she is not ready for prime time,” raising doubts about her viability as a candidate.

Crockett’s campaign finance records have also caught attention, revealing expenditures of nearly $75,000 on luxury hotels, transportation, and security across various cities this year, despite representing a Texas district that centers around Dallas. These filings included significant sums for stays at high-end locations like The Ritz-Carlton and the Times Square Edition in New York.

Interestingly, while Crockett has called for reduced police funding, her campaign has reportedly spent close to $50,000 on security services. During her time in the Texas House, she framed the defunding movement as a way to better invest in communities, yet her recent financial choices seem at odds with those principles.

Controversy has also followed her this year, notably after her remarks towards Texas Governor Greg Abbott, who uses a wheelchair, labeling him “Governor Hot Wheels.” Such comments have stirred significant backlash.

There is speculation about Crockett potentially challenging Senator John Cornyn (R-Texas) for a Senate seat, with an announcement expected by December 8 amidst a competitive Republican primary race.
