While the situation isn’t as dire as it could have been, many are left questioning what led to this incident.
Jaden Daniels’ elbow x-ray returned negative. The Commanders’ standout quarterback suffered a serious injury during the last minutes of Washington’s 38-14 defeat to the Seahawks, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
Daniels dislocated his elbow in the game, and Rapoport mentioned that an MRI would be needed to assess how long he might be sidelined.
“I think it’s not as severe as it looks. But Daniels will likely miss a few games,” Rapoport commented.
The Commanders’ coach, Dan Quinn, is facing criticism for his choice to keep Daniels in a game that had been predetermined for a while.
The injury took place close to Seattle’s 2-yard line in the fourth quarter when Washington was leading 38-7.
As Daniels moved to his right, Seahawks linebacker Drake Thomas tackled him, and footage showed Daniels landing awkwardly.
Quinn stated that the plan was to avoid letting Daniels run in that particular scenario.
“In terms of results, you don’t want to think about injury potential,” Quinn told reporters post-game. “I prefer a more cautious approach regarding running when there’s no lead.”
Daniels had previously been out for three games this season due to knee and hamstring issues. After an impressive rookie season where he led the Commanders to the NFC Championship Game, there have been growing concerns about his long-term health, considering his physical style of play.
“Naturally, I’m disappointed,” Quinn added. “He usually gets hurt while passing or running, not during scrambles. It’s unfortunate.”
When asked about adjusting Daniels’ involvement upon his return, Quinn replied, “I think the key is providing him with proper support. I believe in that approach. It’s essential that we coordinate our calls, offense, and defense effectively. With his hamstring and now this elbow incident, it’s vital we get it right.”
The Commanders currently hold a 3-6 record in a competitive NFC, making playoff prospects seem bleak. Unless a trade is finalized by Tuesday’s deadline, veteran Marcus Mariota will take over the offensive duties starting Sunday against the Lions.
This season, Mariota has connected on 56 of 88 passes, scoring four touchdowns while throwing four interceptions.
