The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) has updated federal workplace guidelines for the first time in a quarter century to protect pronouns, bathrooms and abortion.
The new guidelines are released Federal agencies on Monday strengthened rights for transgender employees, including being protected from misgendering and using the restroom that matches their gender identity. Employees who do not follow guidelines are engaging in illegal workplace harassment.
The agency’s updated guidelines, the first in 25 years, are not legally binding but outline how anti-bias laws will be enforced. They acted in accordance with legal standards that protect workers from harassment related to protected characteristics, ranging from color, race, religion, and sex.
The final category includes gender identity and sexual orientation, along with pregnancy.
Discrimination against employees who chose to have an abortion was considered sex discrimination and included abortion.
“Harassment remains a serious problem in America’s workplaces, both in-person and online,” said EEOC Commissioner Charlotte A. Burrows. statement. “The EEOC’s latest guidance on harassment is a comprehensive resource that summarizes best practices for preventing and remediating harassment and clarifies recent legal developments.”
“This guidance incorporates public input from stakeholders across the country, is aligned with our strategic implementation plan, and helps individuals understand their workplace rights and responsibilities.”
The expanded guidance has been criticized by conservatives and religious groups.
Rep. Virginia Foxx, RN.C., chair of the Education and Labor Committee, criticized the latest guidelines and the EEOC for being “out of touch with reality.”
“The EEOC is out of touch with reality. Today’s final guidance is nothing but a tribute to left-wing activists who want Americans to conform to their distorted political ideology,” Fox said in Monday’s article. statement. “From mandating the use of pronouns to denying biological facts, the EEOC seems more interested in appeasing the mob than working on common-sense policymaking to protect workers.
