Updates on the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix – live

Formula One: Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix Updates

Welcome to Imola, where Oscar Piastri has secured pole position, narrowly beating reigning champion Max Verstappen in qualifying. Nicknamed “the Thunder from Down Under,” I hope that catches on, Piastri has already clinched victory in four of the first six races this season, most recently in Bahrain, Jeddah, and Miami.

Piastri seems to have eclipsed Lando Norris as McLaren’s top driver, but the question remains: can he maintain this impressive momentum as F1 shifts to Europe? Norris, who has had another challenging weekend, will start fourth beside Mercedes’ George Russell, who’s in third.

Verstappen, who clinched pole in the last two races, is keen to respond after being overtaken by Piastri and aims for his third consecutive win at Imola. Meanwhile, his Red Bull teammate, Yuki Tsunoda, will be starting from the pit lane due to a severe crash during qualifying. Aston Martin has shown strong performance, with Fernando Alonso taking fifth place and Lance Stroll in eighth, flanked by Williams drivers Carlos Sainz and Alex Albon.

Ferrari, returning to their home track, faced disappointment as both Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton were unable to advance beyond Q2, starting in 11th and 12th, respectively. Will they be able to give their local fans something to celebrate, or might Italy have to claim Piastri as one of their own? We’ll find out soon, with lights out scheduled for 2 pm BST.

There’s been some drama as well; Ollie Bearman, who finished last on the grid, has raised concerns with the FIA regarding a decision that led to him missing the second qualifying session. Team Haas is seeking clarification after discussions with the FIA, highlighting the need for greater transparency to avoid similar issues in the future.

Bearman mentioned that he didn’t see the red flag light, which supposedly was displayed 3.3 seconds before he crossed the line. The situation has left him feeling like the governing body might not rectify what he believes was an incorrect decision.

Meanwhile, Franco Colapinto, who stepped in for Jack Doohan at Alpine, started in 16th position after receiving a grid penalty for quickly entering the pit following Tsunoda’s crash.

Imola’s storied history in Formula One is marked by both triumphs and tragedies, and its future remains uncertain. Still, it continues to deliver remarkable moments that draw fans in.
