Urban Meyer Reflects on NFL Stint and Coaching Future
It’s been nearly four years since Urban Meyer wrapped up a tumultuous period as the head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars. His time with the team marked his introduction to the NFL, coming three years after he last coached at Ohio State.
Meyer was celebrated during his college coaching career, renowned for leading the Florida Gators to two national titles, earning him hero status in both Gainesville and Columbus. However, his NFL experience was quite different, as he ended up with a disappointing 2-11 record in Jacksonville, a stark contrast to his impressive 187-32 college record.
Currently, there are several prominent coaching positions open at his former colleges—Penn State, LSU, and Florida—but it seems unlikely that Meyer will return to coaching anytime soon.
Meyer expressed his thoughts on returning to the field with a straightforward response: “I have no desire.” Instead, he showed support for Ohio State assistant coach Brian Hartline, whom he described as a “huge fan” and praised for choosing to remain and gain further experience rather than leave.
“You need experience,” Meyer noted. “I’m glad he stayed here. He had a chance to leave and he learned from us and from the coaches.” He believes Hartline is well-prepared for future opportunities.
In addition, there are coaching changes happening around the league, with names like Billy Napier, Brian Kelly, and James Franklin finding themselves let go this season, leaving several high-profile spots vacant.
Meyer’s last college game was the memorable 2019 Rose Bowl, where his team, the Buckeyes, triumphed over Washington with a score of 28-23. It looks like, for now, his coaching days may remain a closed chapter.
