A beloved Italian restaurant in California has permanently closed its doors after serving the community for three decades.
Uricchio’s Trattoria, located in Bakersfield, announced its final meal was served on Monday, ending a 31-year journey in the downtown area.
The popular eatery was not just known for its delicious chicken piccata but also for energizing the usually quiet downtown scene.
In a heartfelt Instagram post, the restaurant said, “Dear friends, we have decided to close. This decision did not come easily. In June of 2025 we celebrated 30 years in business. This past year, however, found us facing some hurdles we could not overcome.”
The message continued with gratitude to its loyal patrons, stating, “We are sad, but ever so grateful to all of you who supported us through the years. You brought the magic and have enriched our lives in so many ways.”
Interestingly, after initially planning a “summer break” in July, the restaurant ultimately decided to remain closed.
Comments from fans reflected feelings of loss. One said, “To make it 30 years as an independent restaurant is nothing short of incredible. Thank you for an amazing run.” Another shared, “You have been our favorite Italian restaurant for years, and our family has celebrated many special occasions at your tables. So sad to hear this… you will be missed.”
Uricchio’s Trattoria first opened its doors in 1995 at the northwest corner of 17th and K streets. The founder, Nick Uricchio, had an impressive background, having worked as the food and beverage manager at the Beverly Hilton Hotel and later running the kitchen at the Friars Club of Beverly Hills.
Nick passed away in 2014 after battling Parkinson’s disease and respiratory issues, and following his death, his daughter Claire Porter took over the restaurant.
Claire revealed to local news that the decision to close was influenced by various challenges that intensified after the COVID-19 pandemic, including losing a longtime chef. She expressed her feelings, saying, “I looked forward to being home more than I looked forward to being at work. I feel like we had our moment in the sun, and it was time.”
