U.S. Treasury Secretary Considers IMF Golf Course Sale

On October 15, 2025, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent discussed potential changes at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) during a press conference. Speaking alongside U.S. Trade Representative Jamison Greer in Washington, Bessent suggested that the IMF might sell a golf course it owns in Maryland, emphasizing the need for the organization to refocus on its primary mission of assisting countries in financial distress.

Bessent responded affirmatively to a question about the expected transformations at the IMF after former chief of staff Dan Katz took on a significant role, stating, “They can sell the golf course.” He further mentioned that the institution should return to its core responsibilities, which include providing liquidity and serving as a safety net for nations experiencing economic issues.

He expressed his disappointment with the IMF’s foray into climate change initiatives and societal policies but didn’t elaborate on those points. Bessent has previously highlighted a shift in focus for both the IMF and the World Bank, urging them to concentrate on macroeconomic stability and development while critiquing what he termed “mission creep” into non-essential projects.

When asked about whether President Donald Trump was aware of the IMF’s golf course, Bessent said he didn’t think Trump would approve and joked that the President might inquire about the golf course’s quality.

The golf course, established in 1968 on 286 acres, was designed for IMF staff, retirees, and families, as well as members of the World Bank and other international organizations. It was created during a period when racial discrimination was prevalent in Washington, D.C., and local residents can also become members.
