U.S. Air Force Bombers Return Home Amid Security Concerns
All U.S. Air Force bombers stationed in the U.K. have been sent back to their bases in the United States. This move follows a suspected terror plot that officials suggest may have links to Iran, which targeted a U.S. military facility last week.
According to a U.S. official, about twelve B-1 bombers were relocated from Royal Air Force (RAF) Station Fairford, located in Gloucestershire, England. This base is significant as it serves as the only European forward operating location for American heavy bombers.
“We can confirm now that all U.S. bombers deployed to RAF Fairford have returned to their home stations in the United States,” stated a department official.
The Pentagon reassured that, despite the relocation, the bomber fleet is still fully capable of launching long-range strike missions from the continental United States if the need arises.
The situation at RAF Fairford underscores a broader concern regarding potential threats to U.S. military installations. Recent events have raised alarms about the vulnerabilities faced by American forces.
“The Airmen that operate America’s bomber force, including B-1s, B-2s, and B-52s, remain ready to deliver precision global strike capabilities – including through operations that launch and recover from the continental United States – anywhere, anytime,” the official added.
RAF Fairford has played a crucial role in supporting U.S. military operations, including missions aimed at Iranian targets.
Last Sunday, U.K. officials discovered three suspicious vehicles near RAF Fairford, which contained fuel accelerants. “We can confirm that no improvised explosive devices were found. However, a quantity of petrol was recovered,” officials reported.
The investigation has focused on possible connections to Iranian state proxies, leading to the arrest of a British-Iranian dual national for “preparation of terrorist acts.”
Secretary of State Marco Rubio noted that the suspected plot “clearly involves the hands of a foreign actor.” Meanwhile, President Trump indicated that there might be links to Iran, which has been in conflict with the U.S. since February.
A total of six individuals were arrested regarding this incident, including five British citizens in their early 20s. However, police stated that all suspects have been released on bail, and the investigation remains active.
“I understand why this development may have surprised many, but I’d like to emphasize that this was an investigative decision made with careful consideration of policing powers,” officials explained regarding the situation of the released suspects.
