US chess star Daniel Naroditsky confronted multiple, unfounded cheating allegations from a Russian opponent before his passing at 29

Daniel Naroditsky’s Untimely Passing Sparks Controversy

A young American chess grandmaster has passed away at 29, leaving behind a legacy marred by a contentious rivalry. He had accused his opponent of cheating, and now, a claim has surfaced linking his death to this animosity.

The Charlotte Chess Center announced Naroditsky’s unexpected death in Charlotte, North Carolina, but the cause remains undisclosed.

Having achieved the title of grandmaster at merely 18, Naroditsky had recently been the target of harsh cheating allegations from former world champion Vladimir Kramnik. Kramnik, who is 50, suggested that Naroditsky might have used online game footage to facilitate cheating through advanced software capable of analyzing countless chess moves in seconds.

Throughout this saga, Naroditsky consistently denied any wrongdoing. Interestingly, no other top players have leveled such accusations against him. After the turmoil escalated, Kramnik deleted his account on chess.com and initiated a GoFundMe campaign aimed at addressing cheating in chess.

During his last streaming session, which has since been erased, Naroditsky appeared visibly shaken, often dozing off while discussing the impact of Kramnik’s claims. A report from El Pais noted his distress during this period.

Following Naroditsky’s death, Kramnik’s response—a cryptic message advising against drug use—was met with widespread disapproval in the chess community.

Indian grandmaster Nihal Sarin expressed his outrage, stating, “He [Kramnik] literally took a life.” Sarin was the last player to compete against Naroditsky before his passing and noted that his opponent seemed troubled, expressing extreme stress over unfounded accusations primarily stemming from Kramnik.

Kramnik, now residing in Switzerland, has yet to respond to inquiries regarding the situation. Meanwhile, a spokesperson from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department stated that the case remains under active investigation, and they are unable to comment further.
