US Arrests Sister of Cuban Military Conglomerate Executive
The U.S. has apprehended the sister of the executive president of GAESA, a significant military conglomerate in Cuba, amid suspicions regarding her connections to the communist government.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio pointed out in a post on Thursday that GAESA is believed to have misappropriated millions in aid intended for the Cuban populace “at the request of the administration.”
Addis Lastres-Morera was taken into custody by ICE after the State Department revoked her lawful permanent resident (LPR) status, as Rubio mentioned.
According to officials, Mr. Morella had managed real estate in Florida while allegedly supporting the government in Havana.
This action was taken at Rubio’s direction. Reuters reported that Morella had entered the U.S. as a permanent resident in 2023.
“Today, Addis Lastres Morera, a Cuban national linked to the communist regime in Havana, was arrested on my instruction after the State Department terminated her LPR status,” Rubio stated.
Morella is the sister of Ania Guillermina Lastres Morella, who faced sanctions earlier this month as the executive president of GAESA.
Officials have characterized GAESA as an exploitative entity that drags resources away from the Cuban people.
Rubio emphasized that, while the Cuban populace endures hardships due to the failing communist economy, GAESA enables a select few within the regime to exploit Cuba’s remaining resources, transferring approximately $20 billion in illicit funds abroad.
He further noted that as a senior executive, Ania Guillermina Lastres Morera is involved in managing international assets allegedly utilized to finance a “luxurious lifestyle” for Castro-era elites, as well as supporting broader ideological agendas overseas.
Rubio also highlighted the worsening conditions in Cuba, including frequent power outages and severe shortages of food, fuel, and medicine. He contended that GAESA was misdirecting resources away from essential needs.
“GAESA’s ill-gained wealth is not allocated for repairing broken power grids, refilling empty pharmacies, nourishing hungry families, or meeting the essential needs of the Cuban people. Instead, it’s being used to enrich Havana’s elites and support their espionage and militant activities against free societies in the region,” he remarked.
