US Doctors Extract Spinal Tumor via Patient’s Eye Socket in Uncommon Procedure

In a remarkable medical achievement, surgeons in the US successfully excised spinal cord tumors via the eye socket of a 19-year-old patient. Cara Flores, an aspiring manicurist from Maryland, has battled blurred and double vision since 2023. What seemed like a typical eye issue turned out to be quite alarming. Scans unveiled a rare malignant tumor, a type called chondroma, which was pressing against her left eye. This slowly progressing yet dangerous tumor can exhibit characteristics like being gelatinous or calcified.

Ms. Flores was directed to Dr. Mohamed Labib at the University of Maryland Medical Center, who informed her that several surgeries would be necessary to eradicate the tumor. The first operation occurred in April 2024, where a segment of her skull was temporarily removed to extract the majority of the tumor. However, the risk of paralysis loomed over her due to another mass near her cervical spine that required urgent intervention.

With limited options available, Dr. Labib and his team devised a crucial plan. They approached the tumor through the lower eye socket, a method previously only suggested in medical literature. Traditional methods via the neck, mouth, or nose could lead to greater risks, including infection or structural damage.

After a meticulous preparation phase, the surgical team, which included facial reconstruction expert Dr. Karpes Vakalia, commenced a new surgery on May 1, 2024. Over nearly 19 hours, they carefully accessed and removed the spinal tumors, all while minimizing pressure on the delicate structures surrounding the eye and spine.

Post-surgery, Flores received additional stabilization measures along with proton therapy aimed at any lingering tumor cells. She’s currently dealing with discomfort while using a neck brace, but her latest scans show no signs of cancer returning. Doctors are optimistic about her prognosis.

Nearly a year later, Ms. Flores is concentrating on her recovery, hopeful for a brighter future, free from the shadow of cancer.
