Progress in Ukraine Peace Talks
On Thursday, U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff announced that “a lot of progress” has been made in discussions aimed at peace in Ukraine, indicating that the negotiations are now focused on the final issue.
While the U.S. has been in talks with Russia, as well as leaders in Kyiv and Europe regarding various proposals to end the ongoing conflict, an agreement has yet to materialize. This comes despite President Trump’s ongoing assurances that a deal would be reached.
“If both sides want to resolve this issue, we will resolve it,” Witkoff stated during his remarks at the World Economic Forum in Davos.
He expressed optimism about the situation, saying, “I think we’ve made a lot of progress.”
President Trump, speaking in Davos the previous day, mentioned that the leaders of Russia and Ukraine would be making a “stupid” decision if they didn’t reach an agreement.
Later that day, Witkoff planned to travel to Moscow. He made an unplanned appearance during a breakfast meeting alongside NATO Chief Mark Rutte and Finnish President Alexander Stubbe, where they discussed the future of Ukraine.
Rutte conveyed confidence in Trump’s commitment to Ukraine’s independence and sovereignty, saying, “I have never doubted this.” He added, “What we need to do is keep our eyes on Ukraine’s ball. Let’s not let that ball drop.”
