Billionaires Migration Trends: A Shift in Wealth

This year, the US is projected to welcome around 7,500 foreign billionaires, whose combined wealth is roughly $43.7 billion. In contrast, the UK is witnessing a marked outflow of its wealthy individuals.

A recent report from an investment consulting firm indicates that by 2025, approximately 142,000 billionaires globally are expected to relocate, with a substantial number favoring the US. I mean, it’s surprising, but also not totally unexpected, considering all the factors at play.

Exciting New Billionaire Statistics

The report highlights that a staggering number of new billionaires emerged in 2024. These migrations often bring various benefits, such as enhancing foreign exchange revenue, starting new businesses, contributing to local stock markets, and potentially increasing job opportunities through their spending.

The UAE leads the charge in billionaire migration, anticipating around 9,800 billionaires with a total wealth of about $63 billion. Over the last decade, the number of billionaires in the UAE grew by 98%. Its welcoming immigration policies, zero income tax, and overall stability make it an attractive destination for high-net-worth individuals.

As for the US, it holds the second spot, with the aforementioned influx of 7,500 billionaires and an impressive 78% increase in their numbers from 2014 to 2024. Factors like the EB-5 immigrant investor program, which has facilitated over $50 billion in foreign investment, contribute to the robust entrepreneurial environment.

Italy and Switzerland Join the Migration Scene

Italy ranks third, with about 3,600 billionaires moving in, bringing an estimated wealth of $20.7 billion. Interestingly, from 2014 to 2024, Italy saw a 20% rise in its billionaire numbers.

Switzerland is not far behind, expected to attract around 300 billionaires with a combined wealth of roughly $16.8 billion, representing a 28% increase during the same period.

Saudi Arabia is in fifth place, forecasting a net migration of 2,400 billionaires worth about $18.4 billion, reflecting a 55% growth in their wealth bracket from 2014 to 2024.

Countries Facing Wealth Exodus

China follows with an anticipated loss of 7,800 billionaires, who carry a collective wealth of $55.9 billion. Notably, China’s billionaire population still experienced a 74% increase during the previous decade.

India is next on the list, with about 3,500 expected to leave, amounting to $26.2 billion in lost wealth, despite having seen a 72% rise in billionaires from 2014 to 2024.

South Korea is looking at an outflow of 2,400 billionaires, worth approximately $15.2 billion. Their billionaire count grew by 17% in the same timeframe.

Lastly, Russia rounds out this list with anticipated losses of 150 billionaires, amounting to about $15.7 billion in wealth, a considerable drop of 25% in their billionaire population.

Growing Wealth in the US

A recent Global Wealth Report from UBS reveals that in 2024, the US had gained more than 379,000 new billionaires. This statistic alone is quite mind-boggling and points to a broader trend in wealth accumulation, with a total increase of 1.5% in US billionaires bringing their total to 23.8 million.
