An F-16 Fighting Falcon belonging to the U.S. Air Force’s 8th Fighter Wing crashed into the Yellow Sea Wednesday morning after an onboard emergency.
The plane crashed around 8:40 a.m. Wednesday, according to the 8th Fighter Wing Public Affairs Office.
The 8th Fighter Wing is based at Gunsan Air Base, South Korea.
The pilot of the jet was able to safely eject and was recovered around 9:30 a.m.

Officials said the pilot was conscious and taken to a medical facility for evaluation.
U.S. and South Korean mission partners worked together to locate and recover the pilot.
“We are very grateful to the Republic of Korea rescue team and all of our teammates who made the pilot’s quick recovery possible,” said Col. Matthew C. Gaetke, 8th FW commander. “We will now shift our focus to the search and recovery of the aircraft.”

Officials said further information about the cause of the accident will not be available until the safety and accident investigation is complete.
