US Marine dead after freak accident at ski resort

A 24-year-old Marine died in a skiing accident at a popular resort in Colorado while returning home for the holidays to visit family.

Jesse Mello, 24, suffered a severe head injury and fractures while skiing at Powderhorn Mountain on Dec. 24, the Mesa County coroner and the resort confirmed to Fox News Digital.

Officials said the Marines were on an intermediate level sailing when the Christmas Eve accident occurred.

Her father, Eric Melo, said: Colorado Sun Witnesses reported that she hit a patch of ice and crashed into a tree. The woman was reportedly wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.

After the accident, ski patrol officers responded and she was taken to St. Mary's Hospital in Grand Junction, Colorado, about 40 miles from the resort, where she was treated in intensive care.

The Mesa County coroner said Melo was hospitalized for several days but died from head injuries on January 5.

“Tonight, my baby girl rested peacefully in the arms of Jesus,” her father, Eric, wrote in a Facebook post.

Melo's funeral was held on January 10th at Messiah Lutheran Church.

She was remembered as a “woman of incredible talent, character and love.”

“She made me want to be the best version of myself no matter what. Her presence alone brought people together and helped others find the strengths that made them unique. She celebrated your victories and eliminated your failures,” the family wrote. in her obituary. “For Jesse, excellence was not a lofty goal, but a standard.”

“Jesse leaves behind a loving family who will cherish her memory and carry her light forward,” her family wrote. She is survived by her parents, Eric Mello and Jennifer Mello, and two brothers, Beau Mello and William Mello.
