Six mayors from the United States participated in exchanges with the Chinese government, who visited to participate in the U.S. Heartland China Association's Yangtze River-Mississippi Municipal Energy Transition Exchange Project.
The visiting mayor was Jim Brainard, Mayor of Carmel, Indiana. Barbara Buffalo, Mayor of Columbia, Missouri; Mayor Lee Harris of Shelby County, Tennessee. Mayor Chokwe Lumumba is from Jackson, Mississippi. Kim Norton, Mayor of Rochester, Minnesota; Mayor Robin Tannehill of Oxford, Mississippi.
The exchange is Formally This is part of an effort to promote best practices between communities along the two major rivers, particularly regarding “energy transition, climate change mitigation and the green economy.”
Both sides discussed possibilities for cooperation; voya automobile, China's state-owned luxury car maker is now specializing in electric vehicles. In addition to China, these cars are also reportedly being sold in Russia, Israel, Turkey, and Belarus.
According to reports Natalie Winters, several mayors praised China's approach to green energy policy. Specifically, investments in electric vehicles and alleged carbon-reducing infrastructure were Chinese policies that some mayors wanted to see implemented in the United States.
“We were talking about climate change,” said Buffalo, Missouri's mayor. “To solve climate change, or at least reduce its impact on local communities and ensure we preserve our planet for future generations, we need to address things like the electric vehicle revolution. We get it: Renewable energy is important, both in production, scale and supply.”
Buffalo went on to say that the “best practices” learned in China should be implemented in American society.
“It's important that our communities learn from each other, share best practices, and implement them in their own communities. We need all kinds of exchanges with China.”
Mayor Harris of Shelby County, Tennessee, praised China's investments in carbon emissions.
“China is rapidly making the right kinds of investments: investing in infrastructure, investing in reducing carbon emissions, investing in new technologies such as electric vehicles, and we have a lot of work to do. ”
Brainerd, the mayor of Carmel, Indiana, said the efforts made in collaboration with Chinese politicians should be carried out around the world.
“Not only will collaboration between U.S. and Chinese mayors benefit hundreds of millions of people in both countries, but our ongoing collaboration will lead to best practices that can be applied around the world.”
Mr. Brainerd also signed a sister city agreement between Carmel, Indiana, and Xiangyang, Hubei Province, China.
