American sprinter and Olympic medal winner Fred Curley was arrested in Miami on Thursday night for allegedly approaching the scene of an active investigation and obstructing police efforts. News 7 Miami reports.
Curley, 29, was encountered by officers in the 100 block of Ninth Avenue and expressed concern about his car, which was parked nearby.
The Olympic athlete was asked by police to leave the scene, but he refused. He reportedly became aggressive and assumed a fighting stance.
Reserve forces were called in to help de-escalate the situation, and a stun gun (taser) that fired darts was used to subdue Carly.
He was charged in the Miami Beach Police Department with assault on a police officer, corrections officer and firefighter for resisting an officer without violence or disorderly conduct.
It is unclear whether Curley had any connection to the investigation police were conducting when he arrived at the scene.
Carly, a Texas native, has represented the United States in two Olympic Games.
At the 2020 Tokyo Games, she won a silver medal in the 100m event. His second Olympic appearance was at the 2024 Paris Games, where he won a bronze medal in the 100-meter dash.
In addition to competing in the Olympics, Carly also competed in numerous world championships. At the 2017 London Games, she won a silver medal in the 4×400 meter relay as a member of the American team. Two years later, at the 2019 World Championships in Doha, she won gold in the same event and bronze in the 400m final.
At the 2022 championships in Eugene, he won the gold medal by running the 100-meter dash in 9.86 seconds. The following year, he won a gold medal as part of the 4x100m relay team at the 2023 World Championships in Budapest.
He is the cousin of former Jets wide receiver Jeremy Kerley.
