US Representative Dusty Johnson officially announces his candidacy for South Dakota governor

South Dakota Rep. Dusty Johnson Announces Run for Governor

Rep. Dusty Johnson, the only member of South Dakota’s House delegation, has declared his candidacy for governor. Serving since 2019, he chairs the House GOP’s Main Street Caucus and is also part of the Bipartisan Problem Solver Caucus. Before joining Congress, Johnson held an executive position at a South Dakota engineering and consulting firm. His earlier career includes serving as a Utilities Commissioner in South Dakota from 2005 to 2011 and working as Chief of Staff for former governor Dennis Dowgard.

Johnson made his campaign announcement during a public event, which local media considered somewhat expected since rumors about his run had circulated prior to the official statement. A video from the campaign launch was shared widely on social media.

Trump’s Influence and GOP Dynamics

During the event, Johnson reflected on his congressional tenure, stating, “It was a great honor to work for you in Congress. Together, we tackled significant issues, cut billions in wasteful spending, and strengthened border security alongside President Trump. It’s crucial to ensure a better future for our children, and that journey starts here in South Dakota.”

Since the announcement, some online critics have claimed Johnson doesn’t fully support Trump, calling his commitment a “hopeless lie.” In response, Johnson explained, “I’ve had a long partnership with Trump. I was invited to Mar-a-Lago, attended the Super Bowl with him, and donated $10,000 to his reelection campaign. He endorsed me in 2020.” He affirmed his ongoing relationship and support for the former president.

Johnson also mentioned he’s worked on significant legislation that aligns with Trump’s agenda, expressing hope that the GOP would successfully pass bills in the Senate by the upcoming July 4 deadline. Overall, his campaign signals a blend of traditional Republican values with the ongoing influence of Trumpism in South Dakota politics.
